Botanical Name: Ulmus rubra
Production: Ulmus rubra is a species of elm that is native to North America. The inner bark of the slippery elm tree is the part that is used in a variety of traditional medicines.
Qualities: The demulcent properties of slippery elm bark make it excellent for treatment of sore throats, coughs, and for soothing stomach and intestinal problems.
Common Use: Dried slippery elm bark can be mixed with hot water to make a tea, or it can be added to smoothies or juices. To make a tea that is soothing to the digestive tract, slippery elm is commonly mixed with licorice root. The powder can be taken in capsule form or mixed with a small amount of warm water and used topically as an emollient poultice.
