Production:Seabuckthorn, also known as sandthorn, sallow thorn, or seaberry, grows on a thorny bush found on mountain sides, often planted for erosion control and water conservation.
Qualities:The bush produces small berry-sized fruits that are bright orange in color, high in vitamins, and have many nutrient rich properties.
Due to the thorns on the bush, seabuckthorn is difficult to harvest by hand, and is commonly harvested after a freeze by shaking the bush. The seeds, fruit, and leaves, can all be used medicinally, and are used whole, dried, powdered, or pressed into oil.
Seabuckthorn is popular as a general skin healing and overall health boosting botanical. It contains vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin E, protein, fatty acids, and carotene.
Common Uses:The ripe, raw fruit is very bitter. As a powder it can be added to smoothies, juices, or other sweet dishes, or taken in capsules. It can also be blended into skin care applications such as masks, creams, and serums.
Storage:Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
