Botanical Name: Moringa oleifera
Country of Origin:India
Production: Moringa, also known as drumstick or horseradish tree, is a fast growing tree with light bark and open, drooping branches. In the spring, the tree produces yellowish-white, fragrant flowers. Native to India, it is now prolific all around the world. All parts - the roots, leaves, seed pods, resin, and flowers - are used as healing herbs in Ayurvedic medicine and believed to cure up to 300 ailments.
Qualities: The moringa leaf is considered to be a powerful antioxidant and have anti-inflammatory and detoxifying effects on the body. Some observe that it can provide both a sustained energy boost as well as be soothing enough to be used as a sleeping aid.
Based on nutrition analyses, it appears that moringa leaves may be one of the most nutrient-dense raw whole foods on the planet, containing many important trace minerals (Ca, Mg, K, Cu, Fe), vitamins (A, B, C, and E), fiber, and protein. Moringa is considered to have the highest protein ratio of any plant so far identified, and a comparable quality to that of soy (but without the allergic sensitivities known to be associated with soy protein), as it is one of very few plants that contain all eight essential amino acids.
In comparison with other foods, various parts of Moringa oleifera have more iron than spinach (5.3-28.2 mg vs 2.7 mg in spinach), more vitamin C than oranges (120-220 mg vs 69.7 mg per orange), and more potassium than bananas (1324 mg vs 422 mg per banana).
Common use: The powder has a mild, earthy flavour and is commonly added to smoothies and juices. It can also be brewed as tea by adding one to two teaspoons to boiling water. Topically, moringa powder can be made into a paste and used to reduce glandular swelling or as a skin antiseptic.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
Safety: We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using any herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications as Moringa may have antifertility and abortifacient properties.
