Botanical name: Aristotelia chilensis
Production: Maqui is a small tree that is native to Chile and parts of Argentina. It is thick with branches and leaves and is evergreen. At the end of spring, the tree blossoms small white flowers that then produce small, purple-black berries.
Qualities: Also known as Cornus chilensis, Aristotelia glandulosa, or Chilean wineberry, the maqui berry is native to South America and has been consumed by the Mapuche Indians for centuries, to improve stamina and strength. Internationally it has gained popularity for its high levels of nutrition.
Maqui berries are recognized to have high levels of naturally occurring vitamin C, calcium, potassium, and iron and have been found to contain antioxidants and anthocyanins (responsible for the dark blue color).
Preliminary studies indicate that anthocyanins may possess anticancer properties, fight obesity, and enhance heart health. Some results revealed that maqui extract helps lower LDL cholesterol levels, reduce inflammation and pain perception, and aids in the prevention of atherosclerosis.
Common Use: Some describe the flavor of maqui berries as a mixture of blue, black, and tart huckleberries, and watermelon. This powder is easily blended into smoothies or added bars and dessert recipes to boost nutrition and add a beautiful blue-purple color.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required, but recommended.
Safety: We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using any herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.
