Production: Comfrey is a perennial herb with large, rough leaves and whitish pink bell-shaped flowers. The turnip-like root is black and deep growing.
Qualities: Comfrey root is said to have astringent, anti-inflammatory, demulcent and cell proliferating properties, and it has been traditionally used to heal wounds, cartilage, and bones. It has a high allantoin content which makes cells grow faster and promotes healing.
Common Use: Poultices can be made and applied topically on irritated skin, aching joints, burns, cuts, sprains, and to reduce swelling around fractures. Comfrey root can also be added to salves and lotions.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container.
Safety: Contemporary herbalists have a mixed view of whether or not comfrey should be taken internally. We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using any herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.
