Since the dough is twisted to make round shaped spirals, it is known as Murukku. These are also known as Murukulu and Chakralu in Andra Pradesh. The same dough made in concentric layers is known as jantikalu. Chakli is a similar snack made in Karnataka and Maharashtra but the ingredients are different.
