Ganesh Chaturthi Puja Vidhi at Home

At home in India someone older ran the puja and you followed. The first year you do it yourself, in an apartment, with no priest and no one to ask, it is genuinely hard to know the order. This is the whole thing, start to finish.

What you need

A Ganesh idol · a chowki or small table with a clean cloth · a diya with oil or ghee and a cotton wick · incense · kumkum and haldi · rice grains · durva grass, twenty one blades if you can get them · flowers, red if possible · a coconut · fruit · and the naivedyam sweets.

The puja, in order

  1. Bathe and set him up. Wipe the idol, place it on the cloth facing east or west, never south.
  2. Light the diya to the right of the idol, then the incense.
  3. Say Vakratunda Mahakaya to invite him in. Sprinkle a few rice grains.
  4. Apply kumkum and haldi to the idol, then to yourself.
  5. Offer durva grass and flowers. Durva is the one offering Ganpati is said to prefer above all others.
  6. Place the naivedyam in front of him. Modak first if you have it, otherwise motichur laddu or boorelu.
  7. Sing the aarti, Sukhkarta Dukhharta, then Ghalin Lotangan. Full lyrics here.
  8. Share the prasad. The sweets go round the room. This is the part children remember.

Morning and evening

Repeat the diya, the naivedyam and the aarti twice a day for as long as he is home. Keep it small. Consistency matters more than scale.

Visarjan

On the last day, do the aarti, thank him, and immerse the idol. With a clay idol a large vessel or bucket at home works, and the water goes to a plant afterwards. Say Ganpati Bappa Morya, pudhchya varshi lavkar ya. Come again soon next year.

Questions people ask

How do I do Ganesh puja at home without a priest?

You do not need a priest. Bathe and place the idol facing east or west, light a diya, offer durva grass, flowers, modak or laddu as naivedyam, say Vakratunda Mahakaya, sing the Sukhkarta Dukhharta aarti, and share the prasad. That is a complete home puja.

What do you need for Ganesh Chaturthi puja?

An idol, a chowki or small table with clean cloth, a diya and oil, incense, kumkum and haldi, durva grass, flowers, a coconut, fruit, and naivedyam sweets. Modak or motichur laddu is the traditional offering.

How many days should Bappa stay at home?

Families keep him for one and a half, three, five, seven or eleven days. Any of these is correct. Many NRI families keep him for one and a half days because of work, which is entirely traditional.

Can I do Ganesh Chaturthi in an apartment?

Yes. A small idol on a side table is enough. Use a bucket or a large vessel for visarjan at home with a clay idol, and pour the water into a plant afterwards.
